Microsoft Word 2010 can save XML Paper Specification (XPS) files with a few clicks of a mouse. But Word does not have built-in XPS converters to import these files into its program for easy editing. If you have an XPS business file to edit, you can convert the file outside of Word using either free online file converters or trial software converters available for download. The conversion process takes a few minutes, but you get a DOC file that Word can read.
Web-Based XPS to DOC File Conversion
1. Navigate your Web browser to CometDocs.
2. Click the green “Upload File” button and browse to the location of the XPS document to convert. Click on the filename and then click “Open” and you will return to CometDocs. Click “XPS to Word” to change XPS to a DOC format.
3. Click the “Enter Email” field and type in your email. When the CometDocs server has completed the conversion, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download the converted file.
4. Click “Send” to send the XPS file to the server. Changing your file to a DOC file depends on the file complexity and size, so conversion can take a few minutes or several hours. Once you receive your email instructions, download your file.
5. Open Word. Click the “File” tab and then “Open.” Browse to the location of your converted file and double-click the filename. Word opens your file in Compatibility mode since the file format is a previous version of Word. To save the file in Word 2010 DOCX format, click “File,” then “Save as” and select "Word Document."
XPS to DOC Software Conversion
1. Navigate to the XPS to Doc Converter website or the Able2Extract XPS Converter website to download a free trial version of the conversion software. Click the “Free Trial” button and follow the download instructions. Once downloaded, start the installation wizard by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
2. Follow the installation wizard instructions to install the conversion software to your computer.
3. Open the software converter you installed. Click “Open” and locate the XPS file to convert. Select DOC for your conversion format and the location of the converted file. Click “Convert” or follow the program’s instructions to transform the XPS file to a DOC document. Most conversion software asks to start Word so you can pull the file up in the program immediately.
- Since XPS documents are not word processing files, you might have some weird characters or spacing issues in your converted file. Expect to spend a bit of time editing to get the file cleaned up.
